A practical guide to the mechanics of buying a ring — from sizing to hallmarking, certification, care, and insurance. The information you need before you buy.
Step by Step
UK ring sizes are alphabetic (A-Z+). Average for women is N; for men, T. Most jewellers can size a ring within 2-3 sizes after purchase — ask if in doubt.
All precious metal jewellery sold in the UK must be hallmarked by an Assay Office. Look for the fineness mark (750 for 18ct gold, 950 for platinum) and the Assay Office mark.
Any diamond over 0.30ct should come with a GIA, IGI, or HRD grading report. This is your guarantee of what you are actually buying — and protects resale value.
At MOH London, bespoke and personalised pieces cannot be returned, but standard pieces can be returned within 30 days. Resizing is typically free within 30 days of purchase.
Clean with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid ultrasonic cleaning for treated or composite stones. Platinum develops a patina — polish annually to restore brightness.
Insure your ring before you leave the store. Most home contents policies cover jewellery — check the single-item limit and consider a specialist jewellery policy.
Precision Matters
A perfectly sized ring should slide on with slight resistance and sit comfortably without spinning. Temperature, time of day, and even activity level affect finger size. We recommend measuring at the end of the day when fingers are at their largest.

Quality Assurance
The Hallmarking Act 1973 requires all gold, silver, platinum, and palladium articles to be hallmarked before sale in the UK. A hallmark confirms the metal type, purity, and the Assay Office that tested it. It is your legal guarantee of quality.
Every MOH London piece is hallmarked at the London Assay Office in Gresham Street.
