Design Basics

Understanding the language of ring design helps you brief a jeweller with precision — and know exactly what you are looking at when comparing options.

Modern Craft

3D Design & Modelling

Every bespoke piece at MOH London begins as a detailed 3D model. This allows you to see and approve the exact proportions, stone placement, and profile of your ring before any metal is touched.

Our designers use precision CAD software to translate your vision into a photorealistic render — ensuring no surprises when the finished piece arrives.

3D modelling lets you make changes digitally before committing to production — adjusting stone sizes, band widths, and setting styles at zero cost.

From Screen to Hand

Precision Craftsmanship

The 3D model becomes the blueprint for wax casting and hand-finishing. Every facet, every prong, every curve is engineered before the jeweller begins — combining traditional craftsmanship with modern precision.

The result is a ring that fits, performs, and looks exactly as intended — with the confidence that comes from seeing it before it exists.

Fundamentals

Design Principles

Proportion

The ratio between the centre stone and the band width determines visual harmony. A thin band makes a stone appear larger; a wider band demands a bigger centre.

Symmetry

Balanced side stones, evenly spaced pave, and centred settings create an ordered, refined appearance that the eye finds instinctively pleasing.

Profile

How the ring looks from the side matters as much as the top. A low profile sits closer to the finger for everyday wear; a high profile maximises light entry.

Metal & Stone Harmony

White metals complement cooler diamond hues; yellow and rose gold add warmth. The metal choice frames the stone and defines the ring character.

Setting Styles

Design Vocabulary

These are the foundational design decisions that shape every engagement ring. Understanding the vocabulary helps you communicate exactly what you want.

Solitaire

One stone, one statement. The solitaire is the purest expression of the diamond — nothing competes with the centre stone.

ClassicTimelessDiamond-focused

Halo

A frame of smaller diamonds surrounds the centre stone — increasing its apparent size and adding scintillation.

Three-Stone

Past, present, and future. Side stones flank the centre — each carrying symbolic weight and adding width.

Pave

Small diamonds set flush into the band create a continuous sparkle. True pave uses tiny prongs; micro-pave is the finest grade.

Side Stones

Tapered or matching side stones add presence without dominating. Trapezoids, baguettes, and half-moons each give a distinct character.
